This pas summer Youthlinc sent 2 teams to open our new site in Ecuador with the assistance of Nukari Foundation. Check out our inaugural projects in 2024.
Through a US State Department program called Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI), Youthlinc was connected to Norma Morena, who is the founder of Nukari Foundation, a nonprofit based in Riobamba and Guamote areas of Ecuador.
Nukari Foundation’s work and goals complemented Youthlinc’s model incredibly well so Youthlinc did a site-visit to Ecuador to evaluate this new partnership. Youthlinc has established solid partnership with Nukari Foundation and evaluated all of the elements required to start a new site, including project potential, safety, accommodation, meals, excursions, and entering into a sustainable & mutually beneficial partnership with the local communities.
Ecuador is in South America, and has remarkable geographic diversity, encompassing the Amazon rainforest, the Andes mountain range, and the Pacific coastline. Its capital, Quito, is known for its well-preserved colonial architecture and sits high in the Andes. The Galápagos Islands, located off the coast, are renowned for their unique wildlife species that contributed to Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. Ecuador’s economy is largely reliant on oil exports, agriculture, and tourism, with its rich cultural heritage and breathtaking landscapes attracting visitors from around the world.

Meet Our In-Country Coordinator
Norma Urena- Nukari
Youthlinc connected with Norma Urena and Nukari while Norma was a participating in a professional development exchange called Young Leaders of The America's Initiative (YLAI). While visiting Utah with the U.S. Department of State, Youthlinc and Norma connected and realized the potential of working together to help achieve each others Missions.
Nukari has bee a Youthlinc Partner since 2023.
Since 2017, our founder has been actively engaged with indigenous women to understand their unique challenges and learn from their experiences. As a trained linguist, Norma immersed herself in the communities where she cultivated deep relationships, gained firsthand insights that helped shape and strengthen the foundation’s programs and initiatives.
In 2019, Norma and Makarena, bounded by a deep sense of purpose and a desire to make a meaningful impact on indigenous communities in Chimborazo, recognized the urgent need to formalize their work and create a sustainable platform to empower indigenous communities. They started a remarkable journey together, channeling their collective energy, skills, and resources into the creation of NUKARI Foundation.
Nukari's Mission:
Nukari is a non-profit organization that offers free educational and empowerment training to indigenous women in Ecuador. Our work focuses on sustainable community development and it seeks to empower young indigenous women through education.
We believe that all women should have the same opportunities to create their own future.
To create a future where indigenous women have access to equal education opportunities to achieve their dreams and economic independence to positively impact their communities and the world.

Meet the 2026 Team Leaders

Team Leader (TL)
Mindy Pack
Mindy is thrilled to be leading a Youthlinc team to Ecuador this year! This will be her 5th Youthlinc adventure (and 4th time as team leader), adding Ecuador to her growing list of service destinations that already include Peru, Cambodia, Kenya, and Nepal. Basically, if there’s a stamp for it, Mindy’s passport probably has it.
Joining her on this Ecuador adventure is her husband Brandon—affectionately known in Youthlinc circles as “Captain Safety”—and their three amazing kids: Chase, Bodi, and Tessa. Together, they’re basically the Rat Pack of service trips, and if you travel with them, chances are you’ll become part of the pack too.

Assistant Team Leader (ATL)
Anna Morris
I’m most excited to meet my team this Service Year—those connections are always so valuable! I’m (almost) a licensed cosmetologist and currently work at a salon in Midvale. For fun, I love doing hair, working out, and spending time with my people!
