Why I Keep Coming Back to Real Life Every Week

Real Life is a program designed to equip refugee and immigrant youth with essential life skills—such as financial literacy, STEM knowledge, communication strategies, teamwork, and creative thinking. But to me, it’s so much more than just a program. Real Life is a vibrant, welcoming community where students and volunteers come together to grow, learn, and support one another. It’s a place where cultural exchange thrives and friendships bloom—where kids are not only taught how to succeed, but are also reminded of their value, their voice, and their potential. Personally, Real Life is the highlight of my week. Every Monday and Wednesday, I look forward to being surrounded by the energy, laughter, and resilience of these incredible young people. It’s a place that fills my heart and reminds me why I’m so passionate about this work.

I first learned about Real Life during my time with Youthlinc from 2017 to 2019. Even though I wasn’t able to participate back then, the program always stayed in the back of my mind. After moving back up to Salt Lake City, UT last summer, I found myself craving deeper connection and meaningful service again. I started looking into ways to get involved with Youthlinc once more, even dreaming about going on a service trip with my husband. When Hay Soe reached out and encouraged me to apply to be a Real Life Intern, my heart lit up. I remember feeling so excited and honored—like everything had come full circle. It felt like the right time, the right place, and the right opportunity to pour my heart into something that matters. I knew right away this was more than just a role—it was a chance to build community, to grow, and to make a lasting difference. I couldn’t wait to show up for these kids and be part of something truly special.

Service has always been an integral part of my life. From a young age, I was taught the value of giving back—of showing up for others with kindness, consistency, and compassion. It’s not just something I do; it’s a core part of who I am. Whether it was volunteering through school, helping within my community, or taking time to listen and support someone in need, service has always given me a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Being involved in Real Life has allowed me to carry that purpose forward in a meaningful way. It’s a space where I can use my time and talents to build relationships, offer encouragement, and help youth develop the tools they need to succeed. Service, to me, means standing beside others as they grow, and Real Life gives me that chance every week.

Real Life has shaped who I am. It’s made me more patient, more aware, and even more committed to creating inclusive, empowering spaces for all. Through Real Life, I’ve seen firsthand the strength that comes from community, and how even the smallest actions—like showing up consistently, offering a kind word, or celebrating a student’s success—can make a lasting impact. Real Life isn’t just a part of my week—it’s part of who I am. It reminds me daily why service matters and how powerful it is when we choose to lift one another up. It’s helped me grow not only as a mentor and educator but also as a human being. It fuels my passion to keep learning, keep connecting, and keep advocating for others. Real Life has not only deepened my commitment to service, but it’s also reminded me that we all have something to give—and that giving can truly change lives.
