At Real Life, learning goes far beyond academics. It’s about growing as whole

humans. As an afterschool peer-to-peer mentoring program serving immigrant, refugee, and low-income students across the Salt Lake Valley. Our curriculum for the month of December centers on social-emotional learning, belonging, and connection.

Before the holiday break, students spent time learning what it means to be kind to one another and to build meaningful friendships. These lessons came to life through conversation, reflection, and a hands-on activity where students made friendship bracelets for themselves and others. The bracelets became a reminder of the importance of showing up for one another.

Our other December holiday activities included meaningful service projects and creative experiences designed to strengthen our sense of community and joy. Students decorated socks with bright colors and Christmas designs for assisted living homes. They also made snowflakes and Christmas trees, filling the room with creativity and holiday spirit. One of the most joyful moments was Candy Ball—a fast-paced game full of laughter and shared excitement.

We wrapped up the year with a pizza party to celebrate the growth, effort, and friendships we built so far this year. At the heart of Real Life is community, safety, and belonging. As students headed into winter break, we hope we send them home not only with good cheer but also with the feeling of safety and belonging.
