Service in Utah

The 2019-2020 Service Year was cut short due the pandemic, but 214 students and 67 Alum Leaders contributed 10,281 hours of local service in Utah being innovative and creative as they continued to serve with social distancing mandates in place.

“This year as we faced challenges like never before, I’m reminded of a quote by Mr. Rogers “When I was a young boy and would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’”

Throughout the COVID 19 pandemic, we have seen our Youthinc participants become “helpers” and perform remarkable acts of kindness in both large and small ways. We have been amazed at the many ways Youthinc participants stepped up to help one another.

In efforts to minimize exposure and keep our Service Year participants safe, in response to COVID 19 we decreased the number of hours required for our service year students.  We asked our students to look around themselves and continue to serve, find ways to help and connect in their communities and spheres of influence.  These budding humanitarians stepped up to this challenge and completed over 10,000 hours of service in the community.

Whether service is completed within the walls of our own homes, within our communities, or across the globe- the choice to be a  “helper” unities us together and touches each of us in indescribable ways.”

-Shannon Moss, Local Service Director

Our Local Service Directory continues to be available to all Utah students as a free resource to track and verify community engagement hours. As a certifying organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Award, 92 students who used the Local Service Directory to log and verify a minimum of 100 service hours were eligible for this award.
