SERVICE YEAR
Local and International Service Program
The Youthlinc Service Year is designed to help youth become aware of local and global needs, and gives them the perspective and experience to meet those needs. Students accepted into the program make a commitment to volunteer between 60-100 hours in their local communities. In return for their service, students can receive $600, $800, or $1000 in sponsorship toward a service experience to a developing country. This is the Local Service portion of the Service Year.
Once accepted to the program, students are required to attend monthly orientation meetings where issues related to humanitarianism both at home and abroad are discussed. In these meeting students form committees related to the needs in the international site and plan, prepare for, and receive information regarding their international service experience. Students are required to finance the balance of the cost of their international expedition, which includes vaccinations, passport, and various personal expenses. Students are given orientations and information regarding their personal fundraising.
Working in Committees allows students to focus service in core areas of international service. The Medical/Community Health committees include participation in a health education lessons, medical supply donations, and other medical activities under the mentorship of American medical personnel accompanying the trip. Construction committees plan and carry out building and renovation projects that better the lives of people in under-developed nations. The Education committees gather supplies and plan and prepare lessons to be taught at primary schools. Cultural Exchange committees plan activities to help the group understand and interact with the communities where we serve. The Microenterprise committee develops business training lessons to be taught in the international site, fundraises, and organizes women into groups and prepares them to receive micro loans to start small businesses. Vocational Training committee teaches various skills – sewing, baking, barbering, computer skills – as requested by villagers.
Rotarians, university instructors, medical professionals, and other mentoring professionals, as well as Youthlinc staff accompany students on international service experiences.
