LOCAL SERVICE DIRECTORY

Eccles FoundationYouthlinc is proud to produce the Local Service Directory each year highlighting the amazing service organizations around the State of Utah.  This year’s Directory is expanded with more new sites along the Wasatch Front, and especially in other areas of Utah where there may be less obvious opportunities to serve.  We have also expanded the section on Strategies for Creating Lifetime Humanitarians which we hope Service Learning teachers will find useful.

Our Service Year participants earn their required service hours by volunteering with many of the organizations found in the Local Service Directory.  It is also a great tool for anyone who is looking for volunteer opportunities throughout the State. Universities, churches, high schools and other organizations throughout the State use the Directory to help guide their service efforts.local service

Our volunteers provide feed back which we use to determine the best places to volunteer. Based on our findings, the best volunteer opportunities consist of:

  • Hands-on service with individuals in need

  • Mentoring in a positive, encouraging atmosphere

Research also shows that when volunteers make an emotional connection, that is when a service ethic takes root within an individual…. And that is how people start on the road to becoming life-time humanitarians.

The Youthlinc Local Service Directory is unique because it includes:

  • Service sites where our participants have had great volunteer experiences that meet the criteria of hands-on service and mentoring in a positive, encouraging atmosphere.

  • Quotes from our student participants reflecting on their service experience at that site

  • Easily accessible information about what the service site does and what the volunteer can do at that site, as well as current contact information

I would recommend my site at the American Red Cross Youth Services to any student who sincerely wants to get involved in their community. I learned so much about my values and how I look at the world. This site taught me a lot about other people and how we can all change the world together because we all have huge potential.

-Paige Cavaness, Mexico 2011 participant

We hope our Directory is presented in a way that young people all over Utah - Youthlinc volunteers and all students - will find interesting and enjoyable to browse.

We hope our Directory makes it easier for young people to become involved in meaningful service - and to see how fulfilling service can be in their lives.

Our Directory is not meant to be comprehensive. We add more sites each year through the recommendations of Youthlinc participants.local service

As I've looked for a variety of service opportunities in the past, I've been able to turn to the Service Directory and find both long-term and short-term projects throughout Utah. It is so valuable for me to have this as a resource because I absolutely love to spend time helping those in need within my community, but sometimes it's hard to know where I can devote my time. With the directory I can easily look something up and set up a time to go and serve! I love how easy it is and the huge variety of organizations there are to serve with!

-Merrit Denison Youthlinc 2010 Mexico Alum Leader , Young Humanitarian Award winner

We also hope that through this Directory, we can encourage all service sites in Utah to attract young volunteers by providing more opportunities for hands-on service and more mentoring to ensure that the seed of life-time service grows within our State's greatest resource - our youth.

If you would like a copy of the Directory please contact the Local Service Director with requests: 801-467-4417 office@youthlinc.org.

I really looked forward to going to the Murray Senior Care Center each week, not just because of the good I was doing there, but because of how good it made me feel about myself. It's hard to be sad when you are doing service.

-Kelly Pearson, Youthlinc participant
